Obituary of Walter Henry Mercer

Walter Henry Mercer, 95, widower of Evelyn Wiggins Mercer, passed away on Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at Vibra Hospital in Mt. Pleasant. Born on January 22, 1919, in Andrews, he was a son of the late John Clarence Mercer and the late Lillian Mercer Mercer. Mr. Mercer was a Charter member of Wayne United Methodist Church for 60 years, served as a trustee, was a member of the Curtis Bell Sunday School Class and was a US Navy veteran having served in WWII. He was a local contractor having built many houses in the Georgetown area for more than 40 years. He enjoyed cooking and fishing. Survivors include five children, Larry Mercer of Georgetown, Ronald Mercer of Georgetown, Glenn Mercer (Kathy) of Barrington, IL, Julia Sanderson (James) of Georgetown and Mark Mercer (Amber) of Georgetown; 12 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; 2 great- great grandchildren; two brothers, Carey Mercer (Elaine) of Georgetown and Bobo Mercer (Gloria) of Georgetown; one sister, Gail Wilson of PA and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral Service will be held at 2 PM Saturday, April 19, 2014 at Wayne United Methodist Church with Rev. Danny Chamblee officiating. Burial will follow at Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Friday at Graham Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Wayne United Methodist Church, 606 Wayne St. Georgetown, SC 29440.
